  In the first place, there was a villa built in 1918 by Baron Takuma, a businessman who served as the general manager of Mitsui Zaibatsu. Takuma is said to have invited many prominent foreigners to this villa. Taking advantage of this villa, Takuma's eldest son, Dan Ino, opened the "Hakone Highland Hotel" in 1957.
